The basics

What is cost to hire?

Cost to hire is the full amount your company pays to bring someone on board and keep them employed for their first year.

On top of base pay, employers cover mandatory social contributions, pension, insurance, and benefits. These vary a lot by country, so an employee paid the same salary can cost very different amounts in Berlin, London, or Stockholm.

Knowing the full figure early helps you set realistic budgets with leadership and finance, intelligently hire across locations, and make new hire offers you can stand behind.

Frequently asked questions

How is cost to hire calculated?

Total cost to company is gross salary plus employer contributions. Employer costs are calculated by Playroll from location and gross salary (and US state where relevant), so they don't change by role. Treat them as a planning guide, not tax advice.

What employer costs are included?

Everything an employer pays on top of gross salary. That covers statutory costs like social security, National Insurance, unemployment funds, and training levies, plus other costs that vary by country, such as pension, meal vouchers, 13th or 14th month pay, and workers’ compensation.

Where does the salary data come from?

Ravio's salary data comes from direct HRIS integrations with over 1,800 companies. Because it's pulled from real payroll data, not surveys, it always reflects what the market is actually paying.

How often is the salary data updated?

Ravio's salary data is updated monthly, and every update is manually checked by our team of benchmarking experts.
